Project Purgatory
Independent Project
This project was many things before it took its final form. It started as an attempt to recreate Lady Gaga's meat dress with seitan. Then was a homage to Yoko Ono's cut piece. And ended as this installation, showing my body of work that didn’t go to plan. Entitled “Project Purgatory”, it is a waiting room in my brain for all my unfinished work.
My intention of this work in the last week was to reflect the chaos and frustration of trying to make projects fulfil the expectations I place on myself.
I displayed the materials used in my ‘failed’ projects – the ghost limb project, the meat dress props and some from my sound piece as well. The point of the incoherent objects, of overcrowding the space, was to show how overwhelmed brain became, and the weight of objects I had produced. I displayed my ‘failed’ meat dress - which at this point was rotting badly, hanging in plastic bags and boxes - to reference horror imagery.
Overall, I wanted the piece to reflect the anxiety and frustration caused by my projects not going to plan, and question when things have reached their final form.
